String Art

Setting:

Warm winter weather, drowning in school work and ready for a craft break.

Characters:

My boss, my father, Killian (cat roommate)

Plot:

My boss was cleaning out her craft closet and gave me this circular piece of wood.  I’ve been wanting to do string art for sometime and with this new gift I figured it was time.  I nailed 11 nails around the perimeter of the wood (an odd number of nails looks cooler in my opinion).  To evenly space the nails I did some awesome math and work with a protractor 😉  I then tied embroidery thread around a nail and skip counted nails by 2’s until I got back to the nail I started on.  Then I switched thread colors and repeated the process skip counting by 3’s, 4’s and on and on and repeated it until I was satisfied with the layering and colors.

My father helped me nail in the stubborn nails, Killian helped by tangling up thread.

Braided Necklace

Setting:

Last year, after the snow melted.  In a chilly house on Ethel.

Characters:

Mice in the walls?

Plot:

I was very bored last year after most of my friends had graduated.  I made this necklace by making a bunch of individual friendship bracelets and then braiding them together.  I got tired of making the friendship bracelets towards the end, so I braided in some yarn to bulk up the overall necklace.

Mason Jar Bathroom Organizer

Setting: my bathroom, Goodwill

Characters: Keiko, my adopted dog for the month

Plot: Mason jars are beautiful. Any type of glass container is pretty much the best in my opinion, but Mason jars especially. They have a cool history about them and they are dirt. cheap. I picked mine up 22 cents each from Goodwill.

I see mason jar organizers on Pinterest, but usually held up using pipe clamps. Although that look is bold and modern, I opted to use a more delicate wire to attach mine to the board. Oh the board? I asked the guy at Lowe’s if I could dig through their scrap bin. Paint? Already had it – made it go further with some water. Add some nails and anchors into the walls and I have a country fun bathroom organizer for less than 2 dollars.

(Keiko didn’t help, but she looked cute as I typed this post out)

Pom Pom Necklace and Hair Accessories

Setting:  Home for Christmas, making (more) gifts

Characters:  Me, hot glue gun, my friend Courtnei (who I borrowed the idea from)

Plot:  I needed to make a little something for my cousins.  My scrap material drawer is always overflowing, so I used some to make fabric pom pom necklaces, and hair pins.  For the base of the necklaces I cut circles out of old (empty) plastic sour cream containers so the necklace would lay flat.  I then cut little squares from the fabric, bunched them up, and hot glued it to the plastic.

For the hair pins I used the same idea, but for the base, I cut a long, oval shape out of craft foam, and stitched it to the pin before glueing the pieces on.

Note: If you’re looking for more detailed instructions on making the pom poms, I found this site to be helpful 🙂
