TREASURE MOBILE

Setting:

Colorado Rockies – Pagosa Springs – Camp. Snow is just beginning to melt after our October storm.

Characters:

Me plus some people who have given me little treasures.

Plot:

Today some young ladies I know made me some really awesome origami. They are pretty talented and their work is beautiful! I kept their gifts in a basket and thought that I should do something great with them. Looking around my cabin I realized I had other little treasures here and there. Things people have given me, maybe something I found on a trail, or just outside my front door. I strung two aspen twigs together and used twine to make a treasure mobile. As I was making it I thought it would be interesting to make other themed mobiles: mobiles of autumn leaves, mobiles of interesting stones, maybe one of old or broken jewelry…etc.

Colored Pencil Design

Setting:

At work (after school care)

Characters:

Me, and the kids I watch

Plot:

When things aren’t crazy after school, I get some time to join the kids in making my own crafts.  Today, it wasn’t anything too fancy, just paper, a gray marker, a ruler, and some colored pencils.  I thought it turned out neat, and it’s a reminder that it’s not about what materials you have, but how you use them.

Tree Branch Necklace Holder

Setting:

Backyard, tree hunting.  Nice weather in the spring time.  In bedroom.

Characters:

Just me

Plot:

In the last two apartments I’ve been at, I’ve used a tree branch in my bedroom in some way. Last year, I used it as a headboard, and this year, I used it to hang my necklaces on.  It was super easy, the hardest part was foraging through my backyard for the perfect fallen branch.  After I found it, I nailed it to my wall and hung the necklaces on it.

Tshirt Rug

Setting:

Entire (1st) Senior year of college.  At my off-campus townhome, in the living room.

Characters:

Myself, and my roomie Lauren, and friends Heather and Anna who tried to support me during this long, frustrating project.

Plot:

I badgered my friends and family to give me their old shirts (many were reluctant to part with them).  Once I collected as many T-shirts as possible there wasn’t enough so I started collecting old sheets, and curtains.  I cut everything into strips and braided them together.  I originally planned to make a circle rug, but as you can see that didn’t happen, it was too tight and the middle kept popping up like a big sombrero.  I abandoned that idea and cut the one long, braided strand into little strands and sewed them all together, giving me this rug.

Recycled Tee Scarf

Setting:

Parent’s house. Supposed to be packing for my flight to Durango the next morning, but I’m not.

Characters:

Me, my dad (its his shirt).

Plot:

I have been really into making “t-shirt yarn” lately – basically just cutting old shirts into one continuous strand and using it for knitting, crocheting, etc. So anyways there is this special way of cutting the shirts that allows for one long strand instead of strips – and this scarf kind of morphed out of that idea. I found this really awesome heathered oatmeal color shirt of my dad’s in our rag pile – I like the finished product.
